Hi Reader!

It's common to feel frustrated when you don't see significant weight changes despite your efforts. But what if you're missing the valuable insights from small weight fluctuations? Even a tiny shift can reveal patterns and opportunities for learning. Instead of dismissing minor changes, what if you explored what’s really happening? Understanding the "why" behind every pound gained or lost helps you adjust your habits and make smarter, long-term progress.

Dismissing the small change

I often hear from my clients before we start working:

  • I weigh myself once a week, and it's literally the same number.
  • I'm up or down 5 pounds, but no significant change.
  • My weight fluctuates, but I can't lose.

It's very frustrating to feel that nothing works. And yet, more often than not, it's actually not true. What you might discover if you look at your weight fluctuations is that you can lose some weight, but then you gain it back. For example, you might have a pattern of losing during the workweek and gaining over the weekend. If you only get on the scale once a week, all you see is more or less the same number.

Or you might think that unless you get under a specific number or lose an X number of pounds, that's not "real" weight loss. If so, you miss the opportunity to learn by dismissing your short-term success.

Opportunity to learn

Even a tiny 1-2 pound weight loss is an opportunity to learn about your body and how it responds to different things you eat or do. Instead of thinking, "One pound in three days is nothing. I'll gain it back in no time." I invite you to be curious about what you did that gave you a pound off. What worked, and how can you incorporate that on a more permanent basis? Small but consistent changes often bring sustainable results.

Yes, it's true gaining weight back is easy and infuriating. Be brave, and get on the scale even if you know you gained. Do you know what your body responds to by gaining weight? Of course you do! It's the weekend, or anytime you go out. Yes and no, it's more specific. It's the choices that you make during those times. Is it because you had a dessert, enjoyed a bunch of appetizers while waiting for dinner to be served, or had a couple of cocktails? You want to know the details so you can make adjustments.

You decide what to adjust

You can decide what stays and what goes as you learn about specific actions that lead to your body's weight responses. Clearly, you want to do more of what works and less of what doesn't. But it's your life, and you have your unique priorities. Do you want to make faster progress when you eat at home so that when you go out and gain a bit, you still show some loss at the end of the week? Or would you rather adjust your choices when you eat out so you maintain instead of gaining?

In summary

Even a tiny change in weight is an invitation for you to learn about your body and how your actions affect your weight. Get insights on what works and what doesn't to decide the best path forward. The choice is yours, base it on your priorities and make informed decisions so you can manage your weight effectively.

Until next week, take care!

Olga
